Dani Pedrosa ended Lorenzo's domination for a while
Pedrosa won his 2nd MotoGP race of the 2010 season. He defeated Lorenzo after an intense battle during the the Eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland at Circuit Sachsenring. Pedrosa firmed his grip on the second place in the World Championship standings as Jorge Lorenzo retained his leading championship position by finishing 2nd. Casey Stoner took 3rd place and completed the podium without Valentino Rossi who made his comeback after a long injury.
The original race was red flagged on lap 9 when a crash for the French rider Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda) at turn 4 brought down both Álvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki) and Aleix Espargaró (Pramac Racing). This trio involved in the accident wasn’t able to line-up for the shortened 21 lap new MotoGP race after failing to return to the Pit Lane within 5 minutes of the red flag. Meanwhile the battle in the top five continues between Lorenzo, Pedrosa, Stoner, Dovizioso and Rossi.
After a 25-minute interval the shortened version of the German MotoGP began, and Mika Kallio (Pramac Racing) slid out at the first corner which resulted in an unfortunate end to his weekend. The top order was much the same as it had been before the red flag. Just like in the original race Pedrosa got his nose in front on the 1st lap, but it was Lorenzo who quickly assumed the race lead, a position he would not hold for long.
The battle between Lorenzo and Pedrosa was developing into a thriller and Pedrosa was at his best as he set a new circuit lap record on lap 10 and then again on 12, breaking his own record from the previous year and consistently riding in the low 1’22”s. Pedrosa crossed the line in 1st position, 3.355s clear of Championship leader Lorenzo thanks to a faultless ride, and Stoner managed to edge Rossi for 3rd in a final corner move that handed the Italian 4th on his return from injury, a highly impressive result.
There was a good scrap going on for fifth between Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team), Dovizioso and Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team), and the latter two went through on the recruit. Dovizioso finished 5th, with Simoncelli achieving his best premier class result to date in 6th. American duo Hayden and Ben Spies (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) were 7th and 8th respectively, with Héctor Barberá (Páginas Amarillas Aspar) and Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team) completing the top 10.
Lorenzo is still leading the MotoGP World Championship standings by 185 points, with Pedrosa 2nd on 138 and Docizioso 3rd with 102 points. Stoner rose to 4th place with 83 points. Valentino Rossi holds the 6th position in the standings with 111 points off Lorenzo.
