Dani Pedrosa dominated the race after starting from pole position!
Dani Pedrosa took his first victory of the MotoGP season 2010 by leading the entire race ahead of Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo. Andrea Dovizioso secured a home podium finish at the Grand Premio d’Italia with a third place by the absence of injured superstar Valentino Rossi, who broke his right leg in Saturday’s practice at circuit Mugello.
What had to be his home race victory became his worst nightmare; Valentino Rossi lost control over his Yamaha a couple hours before the qualification start. With a broken leg, Rossi is unable to join the competition for the MotoGP Championship for the next four months. Pedrosa took his chance during the qualification and started from pole position.
Pedrosa never looked like relinquishing the lead he held from Turn 1 of the opening lap and crossed the finish line after a stunningly aggressive lap. World Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo took second place to hold his lead at the top of the standings. The Fiat Yamaha rider tried to pursue Dani Pedrosa but he saw the Honda Spanish rider secure his victory as the final laps counted down. The Italian Andrea Dovizioso gave the home crowd a podium to cheer by finishing third behind Lorenzo who opened up a slender advantage, between him and Dovizioso, which he did not gave up for the rest of the race.
Where the top 3 positions hardly changed (only Dovizioso claimed third position after started 8th), there was a bigger competition going on around the 4th and 5th positions. Casey Stoner and Marco Melandri became the “winners” for the two positions behind the top 3. Stoner started with a podium place behind Lorenzo and Melandri started even 14th. In the final lap Melandri the San Carlo Honda Gresini rider drove his way through Nicky Hayden and Colin Edwards who started 4th and 5th and claimed the 5th place behind Stoner.
Spies finished seventh in his first race at circuit Mugello, with another rookie impressing in the shape of Aleix Espargaró (Pramac Racing) who took 8th. Simoncelli had recovered from his earlier mistake in time to take 9th, with Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki) 10th Colin Edwards disappointed with a 13th place where Nicky Hayden didn’t cross the finish line.
