Lewis Hamilton interrupts Redbull’s domination in Turkey

McLaren finally seems to have a solution for Hamilton and Button to pursue Redbull drivers Webber and Vettel. It didn’t result in a pole position place for McLaren but it held of Webber from creating distance easily at the beginning of the race. Again the Redbull drivers dominated the race but this time with a negative ending. A Redbull collision made a McLaren 1-2 finish possible during the Turkish Formula 1 Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton claimed his first victory of the Formula 1 season 2010.

It was McLaren biggest issue since the start of this season, Webber was always able to create a distance in short notice. This time, during the preparation for the Turkish Grand Prix, McLaren finally came with a clearly visible solution. From of the start it was McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton, who directly started to attack. Vettel took an opportunity in the first corner to pass by Hamilton but the British driver came back on his position further in the same lap. Hamilton’s teammate Jenson Button completed the top “4” by holding the 4th position.

Hamilton kept holding the pressure on Webber which gave the race an interested twist. Webber was not planning to give up his position away but could not create a comfortable distance between him and Hamilton’s McLaren. Close behind them Vettel and Button were within a 3 seconds distance of Webber also in the race for the lead. None of the four drivers was able to escape as result of an outstanding fight at Istanbul Park in Turkey.

The threat of upcoming rain added more excitement by the present spectators and in lap 40 started everything which make a Turkish Formula 1 ticket worth more than gold. Vettel ran on Webber and went down through the inside in Turn 12 trying to get alongside his teammate. But as he tried to move to the right to gain the entry line his right rear wheel clipped Webber’s left front. Vettel was spinning wildly down the road where he quite the race and Webber, with a broke forewing, continues the race with a 3rd place. The whole performance of the two Redbull drivers gave their teammates in the pits a headache. Everything seemed to be under control and with the two leadings positions in the race the team was preparing for a third Redbull victory in a row. Destiny chooses otherwise.

While Redbull saw his chances fallen apart, the McLaren team hold their breath for the last laps performance of Hamilton and Button. McLaren took gleefully the leading positions with Hamilton as leader. Martin Whitmarsh imitated a ghost when Button decided to attack in the latest corners. Button was not planned to give the Turkish Grand Prix victory to his teammate and increased the pressure by riding side on side with Hamilton through corner 13 and 14. By crossing the finish line they were officially separated by 0.0s. But Hamilton claimed his leading position back in the first corner after passing the finish line which meant the end of the battle. Gasoline had to be spared and McLaren could breathe again.

"It was quite exciting, actually!" Hamilton said in the post-race press conference. "We had good race pace; we knew we would be able to stay with the Red Bulls but they're so fast in Turn 8. One of the Redbulls, Mark Webber, finished the race as 3rd before Michael Schumacher who ended 4th. Teammate Nico Rosberg, who claimed to be faster than Schumacher, completed the top 5 with a 5th place. Renault driver Robert Kubica claimed position 6 in the end, Ferrari drivers Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso finsihed 7th and 8th place. Adrian Sutil and Kamui Kobayashi finished at positions 9th and 10th. This meant the first championship point for Sauber.
