Jorge Lorenzo has won the 3rd Grand Prix of the season. With a lead of 6 seconds over his teammate Valentino Rossi, Lorenzo took his impressive 2nd win in a row and extended his lead in the World Championship.
Rossi had an excellent start. He took full advantage of his pole starting position and took the lead into the 1st turn ahead of Dani Pedrosa and Lorenzo. It did not take long before Lorenzo had overtaken Pedrosa and went in pursuit of Rossi. Nicky Hayden and Casey Stoner completed the top 5 while Marco Melandri made a remarkable push from 11th on the grid to 6th.
Though Stoner had a good start, he crashed out in Turn 6 early during the 2nd lap. He was not able to get back on his bike and had to take his 2nd DNF of the season. Shortly after him, Ben Spies was also forced to end his race after he damaged his bike during a fall.
Lorenzo and Rossi were switching leads after Lap 7, but it was on Lap 10 when Lorenzo took the lead and opened a small gap between himself and the defending champion. While he was able to extend his lead to 4 seconds ahead of Rossi with only 4 laps to go, Pedrosa and Dovizioso fought for the final podium spot.
In an exciting last lap, Dovizioso passed Pedrosa and took 3rd place while Hayden also sneaked in and took 4th. It was the 2nd podium finish of the season for Dovizioso while Pedrosa was left 5th. Finally Lorenzo crossed the finish line with a gap of 5.672 seconds ahead of Rossi.
Melandri finished behind Pedrosa in 6th, with Randy de Puniet in 7th. The rest of the positions in the top 10 were taken by Hector Barbera, Aleix Expargaro and Marco Simoncelli. Monster Yamaha’s Colin Edwards finished 12th.
“I am so happy to win for the 2nd time in a row. It is the 1st time for me in MotoGP and it makes me feel very confident in myself” were the words of a satisfied winner. “It is fantastic to be leading the championship, but there is a long way to go and now we are going to Mugello; a track that I love, but where my rivals are very strong.”
