Mark Webber is back in the F1 championship!

He said it before the race: ‘‘It is now or never!’’. After an exciting afternoon at the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Spain at Circuit de Catalunya, there was only one driver who deserved to win it. Without too much trouble he was able to lead and when Lewis Hamilton crashed out in second place on the last lap it became reality.

After his difficult start of the season, the final qualification for the Grand Prix of Spain gave him a good opportunity to challenge his competitors in the championship. Webber began the race perfectly as he started from pole position. Vettel and Hamilton were looking for an opening but they could not take the lead at the start of the Grand Prix in Spain. The first lap went without incidents for the front runners but in the back 3 drivers had minor altercations. One of those drivers was Pedro de la Rosa who, later on in the race had to quit.

The race came alive after the pit stops. Hamilton overtook Vettel after both drivers pitted in the same lap. At this time Webber was already out of sight but the competition behind him began with Alonso, Hamilton and Vettel. A couple positions further back were Jenson Button and Michael Schumacher fighting for their World Championship points. The McLaren and Mercedes drivers made it an exciting battle to watch over several laps. It was the German who overtook Button in a daring move. Although the Brit clearly had the faster car he was unable to pass Schumacher.

Just when everybody thought that the race was over, Sebastian Vettel added some more drama. He spun off the track because his RBR-Reanult had almost no brakes left. It was clear the best possible result for the young German was to finish and minimize the loss of points. Alonso took his position and although Vettel tried to pursue, he could not increase the pressure on Alonso to get his position back. Luckily for him Schumacher was too far behind to take over 4th place in the race.

In the penultimate lap Lewis Hamilton encountered problems of his own when his tire came off and his McLaren crashed into the tire wall. This cost him a deserved podium finish. Alonso moved into 2nd and Vettel (still without brakes) got a podium place. Mark Webber, who remained untouchable the whole race, finally scored his 1st victory of the season. With his win in the Grand Prix of Spain, he took a big step in the championship. Button remains the leader in the overall ranking but the fight is on.
