3rd double win for Max Biaggi at SBK Salt Lake City

In front of 55.000 spectators Max Biaggi has won both Superbike races at the Miller Motorsports Park in USA. He now has a 15 point lead over Leon Haslam. Biaggi has made his 3rd double win of the year.

Race 1
Carlos Checa was leading the 1st SBK race for a long time, but was forced to stop with an electrical problem on lap 19. This ended the battle between him and Biaggi, putting Biaggi on the 1st place. Almost 5 seconds behind him, championship leader Leon Haslam finished 2nd. The final podium place was secured by Noriyuki Haga for Ducati Xerox while Checa had to content himself with a new lap record of 1’48.045, set on lap 4.

Leon Carnier was in a podium position almost the entire race, but could not keep Haslam and Haga behind him on the final laps. Troy Corser came in 5th and Shane Byrne in a brilliant 6th after starting form a very low position. The top 10 was rounded out by Luca Scassa, Sylvian Guintoli, James Toseland and Ruben Xaus.

Max Biaggi said he was very lucky. “Honestly I think Checa deserved to win, but racing is racing and sometimes these things happen. I am happy for myself, my team and Aprilia.”

Race 2
Max Biaggi’s 2nd win of the day at the USA Superbike put him in a 15 point lead over main championship rival Leon Haslam, who crashed during the second race. Carlos Checa had a bad day as he was leading again, but had to stop on the track. Leon Carnier had a career highlight by finishing 2nd on his Aprilia Italia and Cal Crutchlow came in 3rd. This was the 1st time that 2 Aprilias had a 1-2 podium finish.

Haga did not make it to the podium for the 2nd time and finished 4th. Corser was once again 5th and Guintoli 6th. Shane Byrne finished 7th and Jonathan Rea 8th.

A proud double winner spoke: “We made a double win and that was my dream. Before we came here, I was hoping and dreaming to make a double win. It is just what I need.”

In the World Superbike Championship, Biaggi now has 257 points, Haslam 242 and Jonathan Rea 151.
