Superleague Formula in a nutshell

The ultimate sport experience: Football at 300 km/h
The Superleague Formula is a new race class combining motorsports with football: 18 technically identical Formula cars compete with each other and are sponsored by the world's famous football teams. The official Superleague Formula organisation wants to capture the passion of football with the thrill and excitement of motor racing. The concept was announced in 2005, receiving the full approval by the FIA in December that same year. The project started up in 2008 at Donington Park in the United Kingdom. It is founded and overseen by the businessmen Alex Andreu and Robin Webb. The national oil company Sonangol Group has been the series’ title sponsor since June 2009. SF's mission is to organise races in which visitors experience pride and passion instead of organizing events which are dominated by technology.

Like most European race series the Superleague season runs between April and November. The 1st season in 2008 was won by the Chinese club Beijing Guoan, driven by the Italian FIA GT Championship driver Davide Rigon. This debut race was seen in 62 countries. The 2nd season was won by the English club Liverpool F.C., driven by the Spanish driver Adrian Valles. In 2010 the race calendar increased from 6 to 12 race weekends and made the 3rd season to see the biggest change yet. 18 clubs will regularly compete throughout the season. All the races have been held in Europe, so discussions are taking place about having races outside of Europe.

Cars
The open wheel, single seated cars are produced by Élan Motorsport Technologies, who also produced the cars for Champ Car. The engine is a V12 with a capacity of 4200 cc and a substance of 750hp. The cars are similar to Formula 1 cars. Every team uses identical cars, bearing the colors of the worlds leading football teams. Identical cars put more pressure on the driver’s skills and abilities. The cars are driven without the aid of traction control, launch control or anti-stall, leaving a lot down to the skills of the driver.

The drivers battle for a price of EUR 100.000, going to the winner of each weekend round. Each club accumulates points and the Superleague Formula Champion will be the club with most points after the season’s twelve rounds.
